Debating

The Ardscoil Rís Debating Squad has been up and running since 2019. In its short time-span the squad has made the final 16 in the nationwide Concern Debating Competition. We are always looking for new members to join. Debating is a great way to express your opinions, improve your public speaking skills, improve your writing skills and have fun while doing it! It is a great way to meet new friends and other students from different year groups. If you are interested in joining debating speak to Ms. Farrelly or Ms. Doyle.

Speech and Drama

Ardscoil Rís Players is Ardscoil Rís’ very own drama club. It was started first off in 2001 by teachers who saw the need for a creative outlet in the school.

Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength, with yearly productions, including Macbeth, Hamlet, 12 Angry Men, The Shawshank Redemption and Lord of the Flies, to name but a few.

An open door policy welcomes boys from every year group with an interest in drama to come along and give it a go. Many boys join for a year or two while trying to find their ‘thing’. Many more are bitten by the acting bug and come back year after year, often celebrating six years of drama participation by the time they say goodbye to the school.

We meet weekly, after school, for an hour and a half to play games, improvise and rehearse. Our year ends on a high in May, when we perform our chosen play. Our weekly activities help the members to get to know each other and to learn from one another. Long lasting friendships are formed, many of which last beyond school years.

We are a friendly, open group of eccentric individuals and we always welcome new members. We’ve been hibernating for a while now due to the pandemic, but rest assured we will be making a great comeback very soon! Contact Ms Power or Ms Moore, if you are interested in joining.

Chess Club

The Ardscoil Rís chess club was established during the school year 2020/21. The chess club is open to all students from any year with any ability ranging from complete beginner to GrandMaster. It is a great opportunity for students to meet, play against and make friends with other students from different class groups and years. The chess club is currently taking place virtually during lunchtime on Mondays and Wednesdays, using a free web service to host games, tournaments, and provide lessons for all levels.

Amber Flag Committee

The Ardscoil Rís Amber Flag Committee was founded in 2015 by students and staff who saw a need for positive promotion of mental health in the school.

We comprise 1st to 6th year students dedicated to promoting positive mental and dissolving the stigma of mental illness within the school community.

We host fun, light-hearted events aimed at encouraging ‘chats’ and conversation over a cup of tea or a sweet treat, such as our lunchtime “Cuppa Clubs” and the yearly ice cream day!

We meet weekly at lunchtime to talk about what’s going on in our lives, discuss future initiatives and have some fun. New members are always welcome and anyone interested can drop in whenever they please.
